ISLAMABAD: The Azad Jammu and Kashmir government has failed terribly to provide basic amenities to people who were affected during earthquake in 2005.
As many as 200,000 children are getting education under the open sky and in schools without boundary walls.
As per Azad Kashmir government, there were no funds in national exchequer even to pay salaries. The government has terminated the services of as many as 104 police officials recruited on contractual basis due to non-availability of funds.
“After the devastating earthquake of October 8, 2005 as many as 676 projects were planned in the education sector for District Bagh. Out of these projects, 338 projects are completed, 78 are incomplete while 58 projects could not be launched,” the spokesperson of Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA) said.
The spokesperson added that the federal government has to provide the funds for about 400 projects. Some 68 projects could be completed with the cooperation of the federal government while 135 projects planned with the cooperation of donors could be completed and 137 projects be completed out of sponsored 142 projects.
“As many as 1,075 projects were planned for Muzaffarabad. Out of which 635 were completed, 152 are under construction while 270 projects could not be launched so far”, the spokesperson added and maintained that some 143 projects were launched for Neelum, out of which 62 projects could not be launched.
Similarly, 393 projects were launched for Poonch, out of which 247 projects were completed while 79 projects could not be launched. For Soornai, some 11 projects were planned, six projects were completed while four projects could not be launched.
In Bagh, a total of 49 projects are planned for affiliated sector. The federal government has to provide funds for 21 projects while only two projects could be completed out of these so far. 2 projects out of three were completed with the cooperation of donors while all 25 projects were completed with the cooperation of donors.
As many as 61 projects are planned in affiliated sector for Muzaffarabad, 47 completed while some 25 projects were to be completed with the cooperation of the federal government and only 11 projects could be completed.
The sponsor had to provide funds for some 37 projects. Out of which 35 projects were completed. As many as nine projects were planned for Neelum, out of which six are completed while nine incomplete.
For Poonch, some 37 projects were planned, 31 out of which are completed while three are in complete and remaining three projects could not be launched.
Now the chill weather is going to start in some areas of Azad Kashmir, the students especially in rural and remote areas have to face serious problems in seeking education. The government and ERRA are not willing to initiate adequate measures to face the prevailing situation.
